At The Barbarian Group, we believe in the power of ideas to provoke a reaction. So when challenged with our own brief - to keep the Barbarian tribe happy and inspired everyday - we turned to Clive Wilkinson, an architect who shares our passion for interesting ideas in a world pre-disposed to boring sameness.
The challenge was to create the most collaborative, creative environment possible. The result? A desk that we could all share, literally - 4,400 square feet of undulating, unbroken awesomeness to keep people and ideas flowing.
So come say hello, have a drink, pull up a chair and let’s create something worth talking about.
The Barbarian Group won the Grand Prix in the inaugural ‘Innovation’ category at Cannes in 2013 for our open-source coding platform, Cinder. Originally The Barbarian Group wrote Cinder as an in-house tool. Cinder has since been open-sourced and has quickly taken on a life of its own with a huge global community not just using it, but contributing back with new source code, bug fixes and documentation. A number of technology giants are leaning on Cinder for products as well as R & D. Beyond commercial use, academic institutions around the world are also using it for research and teaching it in courses. Cinder continues to evolve and advance to keep up with the creative technology needs of its community. Its status as an open source project demonstrates a new way of working for our industry. Even as we compete on the creative, we can still cooperate on the technology. Contact us to learn about how Cinder can help your brand.
In order to illustrate the important relationship between sound and science, we collaborated with musician, Matthew Dear and GE Acoustics Engineer, Andrew Gorton, to gather over 1000 discrete samples recorded at GE facilities. From these, Dear composed an original electronic track featuring sounds from the world’s largest machines, all culminating in a much-anticipated drop.
Samsung CenterStage is an immersive digital retail experience that utilizes an interactive touch screen showroom to elegantly showcase the brand’s home appliances line, in a one-to-one ratio as they appear in real life situations. CenterStage is both beautiful and useful; and initial results from the first installations in two Chicago Best Buy stores are impressive. Nearly 20% of shoppers who interacted with CenterStage in the first month purchased a Samsung home appliance in that store. Of those customers who experienced CenterStage, 16% of them ended up purchasing a Samsung appliance.
To celebrate Bacardi’s heritage, we teamed up with Pandora to create the “Bacardi Loud & Untameable” station and featured a series of live music collaborations facilitated by Bacardi. The custom content was then housed on a new-to-market, Bacardi-branded Pandora station. The program was a huge success and we surpassed all benchmarks across Awareness, Conversion, Engagement, and Social Lift.

The City of New York asked us to create a striking way to inform drivers of the citywide speed limit. We created citywide road signs that would display a skeleton next to the words 'SLOWDOWN' to drivers going over the speed limit. This simple, powerful image garnered attention across print, online, and televised media spreading the message of safety, and Mayor Michael Bloomberg called it “one of the more brilliant ideas I’ve ever heard.”
