If you had one day to spend $10 million, how would you spend the money?

p(formspringmeAnswer). Ha. You know, I was just looking how Jolie had answered this question, and I thought, “oh man, I could write an essay about that one.” Then I find out that I actually got asked the same question. By FORMSPRING. I am cutting them some slack, though, since my friend Cap works there, and, thus, I can conclude this question was actually asked by a real life friend in my case. ;)

The answer to this question, though, depends on what the word “spend” means. Invest? Donate? Do these count as spend? Or do you have to “buy” things? And, in “buying” can you also not be “investing,” as in am I allowed to buy like 1% of Twitter or something?
If “spending” means I can donate or give away and I had to spend it all in one day, I’d give away the vast majority of it to charity and friends. I suspect, though, this is not allowed in the asking of this question.
Assuming that “spending” meant “buying” and I had to own something tangible, I’d probably blow it all in one day on Second Market (I can’t link to it because Formspring and Tumblr don’t play well with links but here: ” http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=chrome=UTF-8=second market market ). I’d do this mainly because presumably I could get it done in one day.
Though actually, now that I think about it, if buying largish fractions of companies on Second Market counts as “buying,” then so does buying very small fractions of companies on the NYSE or something, right? If so, I’d put it in Index funds.
Assuming neither of these are options, and I had to buy, like, STUFF, for, like, ME, I would make a ridiculous real estate deal in one day at a stupid premium to get the deal done in a day. Probably something like $7-8MM of real estate in an expensive but beautiful place, like 100 acres in the bay area, spending the other $2 mil or so on the necessary legal fees and bribes to get everything done in time. Oh, and I’d blow the last $100k on a Kelmscott Chaucer.
Assuming that the whole thing is like Brewster’s million style, and I had to have nothing to show for it, I’d take all my friends to space. 100 people pre-booked, paid in full on a Virgin Galactic party plane.

Ask me anything
