sciencevsromance: I am so excited that Vincent Moon is coming...
p. I am so excited that Vincent Moon is coming to Seattle for a whole week at the Northwest Film Forum [ nwff ]. I love many of them, but this is maybe my favorite takeaway show. The moment where Zach Condon sits down at the cafe table full of brass instruments after strumming alone in front of the boulangerie is just so indelible and perfect. It gets me every time. ( Beirut – LA BLOGOTHEQUE )
I had the pleasure of being introduced to Vincent Moon during a night of serious drinking a year or so back, during the Arcade Fire’s hiatus. I had recently read a fairly long story of them in the Merge Records Retrospective _ Our Noise: The Story of Merge Records ._ In this book I was shocked to learn that a) Win and Régine had lived in Cambridge, MA at the same time as me, and not far from me, and b) hung out at the same venues (TTs and the Middle East), c) played some live gigs while in town and d) it was a friend of mine that suggested they sign to merge.
How had I never met them? Had I seen some proto-Arcade Fire show? These were all very interesting questions. To me. Unfortunately, I was stupid drunk and all I could do was ask Vincent Moon, over and over, about this period in the band’s history, since he had known them then. He had little offer, and was polite, but was clearly annoyed.
The next week my Arcade Fire Neon Bible live DVD came in the mail, directed by Vincent Moon and it’s just… fantastic. Effortlessly brilliant in so many different ways. The hand shot footage is amazing. The live footage is amazing. The videos are amazing. And you can watch him grow as a director.
Then, a week after that, the first trailer for Burning, the Mogwai movie directed by Vincent Moon came out, showing a live performance Fear Satan at a show I had been to.
I had known nothing of either of these when I met him, and to this day I kick myself for what a drunken baffoon I was upon meeting such a monumentally talented individual.
